he Philippine coast guard special services office has been very active this year as coast guard athletes continue to reap honors in the country and abroad. Their achievements bring honor not only to the organization but for the country as well.
The PCG judo club participated in the 1st uniformed service judo championship held January 2009 at Philippine army wellness center, Fort Andres Bonifacio, taguig city, wherein ENS JANSEN Y BENJAMIN PCG and SN2 Daniel Pedro PCG won the gold medal in minus 81kg & minus 90kg divisions, respectively. LT GARY DALE GIMOTEA PCG bagged bronze medal in minus 73kg division. Members of the AFP and PNP participated in the tournament.
SW2 Karen Ann Solomon PCG, SW2 Ruth Dugaduga PCG and SW2 Helen Dawa PCG defended their title when they bagged the medals in three categories during the national judo tournament held at SM City Marikina last May 2009. These achievements earn them a slot in the 25th South East Asian Games (SEA Games) to be held in Laos in December 2009.
Also, during the 1st Asian Matial Arts Games held in Bangkok, Thailand in August 2009 where SW2 Karen Ann Solomon PCG and Helen E Dawa PCG bagged two bronze medals. More than 41 countries participated in said tournament.
In May 2009, coast guard athletes who are members of he Philippine dragon boat national team garnered eight gold medals and three silver medals in the Macau International dragon Boat races, and in the 6th nanning international dragon boat invitational tournament in china. Likewise, team successfully defended their title as world dragon boat champion and record holder in the 200-meter category in competitions held in Prague, Czech Republic between 26 and 30 August 2009.
On top of this, the Philippine coast guard is active in promoting marine environmental protection by regularly participating in fun runs advocating environmental awareness, such as the “DZMM Takbo sa Kalikasan” and Earth day marathon.
